#BlackHealth: How Peloton Helped Me Get Off My Couch This Winter

Winter doesn’t want us to win.  Or at least, it can feel that way.

It’s a season where many of us, drunk off holiday indulging, let a hangover of inactivity, carry on into the new year.  Every January we promise ourselves, this will be the year we get in shape.  Then by February, we’re finishing our second box of Valentine’s Day chocolates, sitting on our couches, scrolling the ‘Gram, wondering where the motivation went.

Then there’s the fact that winter feels like the worst time to work out.  Between having shorter days and less sun, fighting seasonal affective disorder (also appropriately titled SAD), and wanting comfort foods (mac and cheese anyone?!), staying healthy can feel like a mountain you can’t climb no matter how hard you try.

And for African-Americans, despite the saying that ‘Black don’t crack,’ our health outcomes are often worse, and barriers to gyms and fitness studios make the struggle to work out real.

That’s why this winter, I decided to give an at-home gym system a try and brought a Peloton Tread in my household.  You may have heard the hype around Peloton because its fans go (almost) as hard for the brand as #TheBeyHive, or because it’s extremely pricey $4295 to be exact.  That’s almost two months of rent in an expensive place like New York City. (But it’s also about the cost of an expensive gym and personal training over one year depending on your tastes).  No matter what you’ve heard, the Peloton experience is definitely like none other.  Here’s my honest review of how it helped me get off the couch this winter.

It’s Running, Walking, Yoga and Bootcamp… All In One.

The Peloton Tread is literally like a luxury treadmill and personal trainer all-in-one, in your house.  The treadmill includes two pairs of weights and a large TV monitor that has access to live or on-demand classes, with instructors who talk to you the whole way through.

Literally anything you could imagine doing on a treadmill or your living room floor is available: running, walking, boot camp, yoga, cardio, and strength.  There is even a set of meditation classes.

On days, I didn’t feel like running, it was good to know I could do a power walk or lift weights instead.

You Have No Excuse Not To Work Out.

Let’s also talk about the power of getting a real, sweat-dripping work out without leaving your house.  I literally had ZERO excuses. If I was watching TV, the Peloton was sitting right there in my living room staring at me like, “Sis, you can afford to walk for 10 minutes.”

Sometimes, that 10-minute walk on the tread would be all I needed to be inspired to walk 15 more minutes… then lift weights… then meditate.

Getting off the couch is half the battle and having an indoor fitness machine for the first time helped me win.

They Bring The Equipment To Your House and Set It Up.

When the folks from Peloton agreed to let me try out the Tread, I admit I was a little worried.  I live in a small one-bedroom apartment in NYC (a closet to folks who live in the south). Then the whole idea of putting together a treadmill on my own was intimidating.

But the crew called ahead of time, carried the pieces inside and assembled within about an hour.

There was one hiccup though: As part of testing it out, they saw that the tread portion of the treadmill was moving kinda sluggish… But rather than leave it, they disassembled the machine completely and brought up another one.  The extra hour of set up time may have delayed my afternoon, but I appreciate that they were trained well enough to notice and care to give me the best available.

You Pick The Trainers You’re Feeling.

Finding the right trainer is like finding the right hairstylist or barber.  Once you have a vibe, you know that’s your go-to person. With Peloton, I got to test out online classes led by different trainers, and customize even further by picking the type of music genre you wanted to hear during your workout.

My go-to trainers were Chase Tucker (encouraging and tells great stories) and Jess Sims (high energy) and I always picked hip hop. I did wish I could eliminate music altogether while hearing the instructors’ directions sometimes, but the Peloton doesn’t have that feature.  So I’d just put it on mute, turn on closed-captioning and listen to my own playlist.

There is no substitute for having someone physically with you, but to save hundreds of dollars on personal training and still have that motivational voice in your ear, online instructors are an excellent option.

In addition to picking trainers and music, you can also customize how long your workout is.  On those busy days, you only have 10-20 minutes for fitness before you have to run to the train, or days you want to push yourself for a whole hour, Peloton gives you a range of classes to pick from.

It Gives You A Tribe to Cheer You On.

Fitness journeys can feel lonely at times. Especially if you feel like you’ve fallen off or are battling social media comparison anxiety.  One of the big motivators with Peloton was seeing other members working out at the same time (you can even high-five each other on Leaderboards during workouts).

I felt inspired when I saw, “Black Girl Magic: The Peloton Edition” Facebook Group, which has almost 4,000 members.  They defy any stereotype or perception that Black women don’t work out or invest in our health.

Reading stories of Black women like Katie Davis, showed me that whether you’re just starting out, working through pregnancy or post-partum changes, fitness doesn’t have to stop.

So Was It Worth The Hype?

On a scale from “Overhyped” to “Worth The Hype,” I would rank Peloton Tread as Worth The Hype.  But with a few caveats:

  • If you live in a small apartment or studio as I do, the Tread will take up space.  So just make peace with removing unnecessary furniture, or try a different Peloton fitness option like the bike.
  • It’s a financial investment, so be serious about the commitment.  Peloton’s cost should inspire you to make it more than an expensive dust collector where you let your clothes pile up.  In addition to the treadmill, the Peloton membership is $39 a month to access all the classes.
  • For the real plug, you can always try the free 30-Day Home Trial like I did and send it back if you’re not sold.

No matter what machine you use, getting off the couch requires your own determination to put your health first.  But if you change your environment and put give yourself the tools to succeed, you will see that every step you take is worth it.

Barack Obama delivers touching speech about ‘heartbreaking’ death of Kobe Bryant at NBA All-Star brunch

During the NBA All-Star Weekend Newsmaker Brunch in Chicago on Saturday, former president Barack Obama delivered a touching speech in honor of Kobe Bryant and the eight others, including his daughter Gianna, 13, killed in a helicopter crash last month.

“That loss is something that I know many are still grappling with,” Obama told attendees, Deadline reports. He added, “particularly Kobe because he was with his daughter and those families, and those children.”

Kobe and Obama were friends and the former POTUS previously invited the Los Angeles Lakers to the White House in 2009 in honor of them winning the NBA championship.

TheGrio previously reported, in addition to Kobe and Gigi, Christina Mauser, 38; Sarah Chester, 45, and her daughter Payton, 13; along with the pilot, Ara Zobayan, 50,  John Altobelli, 56; his wife, Keri Altobelli, 46; and their 13-year-old daughter, Alyssa all lost their lives when their helicopter crashed into a hillside in Calabasas, California on the morning on Jan. 26.

The helicopter was transporting Kobe, 41, his daughter and the other players and parents to Kobe’s Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks for a girls’ basketball game. The girls were teammates on the same basketball team, which Kobe and Mauser coached.

The day of the crash was so foggy that the Los Angeles Police Department’s Air Support Division grounded all of its helicopters until later in the day, LAPD spokesman Josh Rubenstein told the Los Angeles Times.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is still investigating the crash and a final report could take as long as a year to be complete, according to the Times. The NTSB had previously recommended that helicopters be equipped with a safety feature known as a terrain warning system, which could have saved the passengers on board.

During his speech, Obama noted that the deaths of the teenagers were especially “heartbreaking.”

“Those of us who have had the joy and privilege of being parents and taking kids to ballgames, and then rooting for our children, and seeing our dreams and hopes passed on to them. Nothing is more heartbreaking,” he said.

A public memorial for the victims is scheduled to take place at the Staples Center on Feb. 24.

Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar have ‘mutual respect’ following alleged beef

Big Sean has addressed the reported tense history he has with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar.

Both artists have previously worked together on a few occasions, but things went left in 2015 when Sean dropped a freestyle titled “Me, Myself, and I”. Fans assumed he subliminally fired shots at Lamar.

Big Sean later denied this, claiming the lyrics were directed at the “people,” Complex reports.

In a new interview on Joe Budden’s series Pull Up, Sean further explained the situation between him and Kendrick.

“One of the people that, especially after Nipsey [Hussle] died was important for me to connect with was Kendrick,” he said. “Me and Kendrick got a history…a relationship as peers. When this whole Big Sean, Kendrick beef was going on, it was something I wish I would have spoken up [on].”

The Detroit native acknowledged that the drama started with “Me, Myself, and I” which was followed by the track “No More Interviews” in 2016.

“So then I remember going online and seeing like, ‘Oh, is he talking about Kendrick?’ ‘Cause I’m talking about people who rap fast. … I wasn’t beefing with nobody. I’m just rapping n***a. It wasn’t like a specific person or else I would’ve said his name.”

But then Kendrick dropped “The Heart Part 4”  in 2017, prompting the fandom surrounding the men to conclude he was taking aim at Sean.

Big Sean called TDE CEO to ask about the song, and was told, “It ain’t about you at all.”

Fans didn’t buy it.

“Every verse I do, people be like, ‘Oh is this a response? Is this a response?’ And I’m like, ‘Damn I can’t even show no aggression, people think it’s a damn response.’ It got to a point where somehow it was just a weird tension between me and him even though it was already said it wasn’t no beef. People made it that way,” Sean explained.

“Fast forward, I let this sh*t go. He let that sh*t go—he never talked about it. And I never talked about it and I should’ve said something, bro. I should’ve just came out and been like, ‘Naw, that ain’t it.’ … But I didn’t. I was working on this song with Nip and then Nip passed. I have a show for J. Cole’s festival. I’m sitting next to Punch from TDE. He like, ‘Bro, wassup—you ever holler at Kendrick?’ I damn near [had] put it on the back burner in my brain. I’m like, ‘Damn, no I never did. And he’s like, ‘Man, you should definitely holler at him.’ Got his number and we communicated. The respect is mutual. It was literally nothing.”

And there you have it, Grio fam!

Alabama lawmaker introduces mandatory vasectomy bill amid abortion ban controversy

An Alabama lawmaker has responded to the abortion ban by introducing a mandatory vasectomy bill.

Rep. Rolanda Hollis (D) said “It always takes two to tango,” after noting that the bill sends “the message that men should not be legislating what women do with their bodies.”

The move comes a year after Alabama’s controversial abortion ban, which has been temporarily blocked. The state legislator says the mandatory vasectomy bill would require a man to personally pay for the procedure, “within one month of his 50th birthday or the birth of his third biological child, whichever comes first,” Yahoo Lifestyle reported.

Rep. Hollis introduced House Bill 238 on Thursday, noting that under existing law, “there are no restrictions on the reproductive rights of men.”

In a statement shared with Yahoo Lifestyle, Hollis said the bill “is meant to neutralize last year’s abortion ban bill, and sends the message that men should not be legislating what women do with their bodies.”

In a separate statement to AL.com, she said “It always takes two to tango. We can’t put all the responsibility on women. Men need to be responsible also.”

Hollis supporters praised House Bill 238 on Twitter but critics call it “sick” and “Communism.”

Hollis responded to some of the hate in her statement, while also calling out “the majority party” that continues to “dictate a woman’s body and her reproductive rights” through legislation.

She described it as an “outrageous overstep in authority.”

She added, “Just as I would turn to my doctor over my state legislator to make recommendations when deciding whether or not to have a surgery, or whether or not to take a certain type of medicine, it is my doctor with whom I — or any of my loved ones — should consult when it comes to making the incredibly difficult decisions related to my personal reproductive rights.”

Sen. Ted Cruz responded to the proposed bill, denouncing it without noting the irony. Cruz is staunchly pro-life.
