Sarah Palin offers survival tips to Kamala Harris

Former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin had some warmhearted and uncharacteristically nonpartisan advice for Kamala Harris as she joined Palin in the small club of women chosen to run for vice president: "Trust no one new" and "Don't get muzzled."

In an Instagram post hours after Harris was announced as Joe Biden's running mate Tuesday, Palin recounted her experience as the late Sen. John McCain’s 2008 running mate as guidance for Harris. She provided the California senator with a 6-point plan for avoiding trouble as a woman occupying the No. 2 spot on a major party ticket.

“Congrats to the democrat VP pick! Climb upon Geraldine Ferraro’s and my shoulders, and from the most amazing view in your life consider lessons we learned,” began Palin’s post.

Part of Palin’s message took the form of cautionary advice.

“Out of the chute trust no one new,” wrote Palin, who had some well-publicized disagreements with members of McCain’s staff.

“Don’t get muzzled — connect with media and voters in your own unique way,“ she wrote, an allusion perhaps to complaints from McCain’s staff that she sometimes went off-message. “Some yahoos running campaigns will suffocate you with their own self-centered agenda so remember YOU were chosen for who YOU are.“

Palin was the second woman chosen to be the running mate on a major party ticket, selected by Republican nominee McCain in 2008 when she was the governor of Alaska. New York Rep. Geraldine Ferraro was the first, picked to be the No. 2 person on the 1984 Democratic ticket headed by former Vice President Walter Mondale. Both tickets lost badly.

“Don’t forget the women who came before you,” Palin urged.

Palin’s post ended on an upbeat note: “Have fun! This IS the greatest country in the world and hopefully you’ll be blessed beyond belief, like I was, with meeting new people from all walks of life and see just how great it is!“

And, she promised more: “More to come ... including one of the funniest things in my life, right before my debate with Sen. Joe Biden ... stay tuned!“
