Poll: Harris viewed more favorably than unfavorably

Kamala Harris is the only candidate on either major party ticket with a net favorability rating that is positive, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday.

The California senator, announced last week as Joe Biden’s running mate, was viewed favorably by 39 percent of those polled, as opposed to 35 percent who viewed her unfavorably. That net rating of plus 4 tops the ratings of Biden (minus 6), President Donald Trump (minus 12) and Vice President Mike Pence (minus 5).

Thirteen percent of those polled said they didn’t know enough about Harris or weren’t sure what to think of her. For Trump and Biden, that figure was 1 percent, for Pence 4 percent.

Not surprisingly, the poll shows that Harris is viewed through a partisan lens: Only 4 percent of Trump supporters view her favorably, as opposed to 71 percent of Biden’s supporters. Biden announced his choice of Harris on Tuesday; the two will be formally nominated at the Democratic National Convention, which starts Monday.

Overall, Biden leads Trump by a margin of 50 percent to 41 percent, a lead that is slightly smaller than in the last NBC/WSJ poll. In 11 battleground states — Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — Biden is ahead of Trump by 7 points, 49 to 42.

However, when asked about their motivation for backing Biden, only 36 percent of Biden’s supporters said they were doing so because they were very much in favor of Biden, vs. 58 percent who said they were doing so because they were against Trump. In contrast, 74 percent of Trump supporters said they were voting for the president primarily because of their support for him.

The poll was conducted Aug. 9-12 of 900 registered voters — more than half of whom were reached by cell phone — and it has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
