#BankingWhileBlack: Black doctor outraged after bank teller calls police thinking he wanted to rob the branch

Anthony Onyegbula, a doctor in Georgia, entered a bank while Black and had the cops called on him because they thought he was going to commit a crime.

Onyegbula, who treats cancer patients daily in his Henry County practice was outraged that a bank worker at the United Community Bank on Eagles Landing Parkway called 911 saying he looked suspicious, WSBTV reports.

On Thursday, the doctor said he was trying to open a new bank account and was at the branch with his wife, but moments later they were faced with the fuzz.

“They said I was suspicious, I was wearing a hat, and they thought I wanted to rob the bank, and I was like, ‘What?’” Onyegbula told reporters.

Onyegbula said it was clear case of racial profiling.

The outlet got a transcript of the 911 call.

911 call: “He went to the front door and he’s been on his phone, and, I, um, called from my phone to tell the employees to lock the front door.”

911 call: “He’s been on his phone out front. And we have no cars in the parking lot. He’s a walker. So, I feel like he’s up to no good.”

Unbelievable.

When Onyegbula realized they closed the bank early and called the cops on them, he said they left and went to another nearby bank to open an account.

But police showed up there.

“Here come the same police, came inside the bank, now it’s two of them, and they said they told the manager to clear the room, because they wanted to talk to us,” Onyegbula said.

In the end, no charges were filed.

Onyegbula said he was embarrassed by the ordeal.

United Community Bank sent the station a statement from the regional president:

“For privacy reasons, we do not comment publicly about the details of any customer or potential customer transactions. However, providing excellent customer service is our top priority and we are disappointed that we didn’t deliver that to Drs. Onyegbula and Tedga in this case. This afternoon we were able to speak directly with Drs. Onyegbula and Tedga to personally apologize for the misunderstanding. We are glad for the opportunity to connect and improve, and hope to have an opportunity to earn their business in the future.”

We hope they sue for some of that money inside that bank too!
