Report: Over 28 Million Workers File For Unemployment Despite Trillions Of Dollars In Stimulus Spending

unemployment

Since the start of the COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus, health crisis, numerous Americans around the country have lost their jobs and have been severely impacted by the economic fallout. With over 700,000 jobs lost, the number of people filing for unemployment continues to climb each week as the outbreak continues to spread. In the last six weeks, over 28 million workers have applied for unemployment compensation from the government.

Last week, the Labor Department’s latest report says roughly 3.8 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits. Applications for benefits hit a record 6.867 million in the week ended March 28. These new figures bring the six-week total to 30 million U.S. workers filing jobless claims due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Out of the astronomical number, at least 10 million people who have filed claims have yet to receive benefits.

“The first wave was dominated by displaced leisure and hospitality workers, workers at doctor and dentist offices and administrative positions in general,” said Mark Vitner, a senior economist at Wells Fargo Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina, to the New York Times. “A larger portion of more recent job losses have likely been in manufacturing, logistics and professional services.”

The implementation of the stimulus package was intended to slow down the economic devastation but reports show that relief programs won’t be enough to save the economy. In a separate report released this week, the Commerce Department said that consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, has slumped by a record 7.5% last month. Personal income plummeted 2.0% in March, the most since January 2013, reflecting decreases in compensation.

Due to the viral outbreak, Americans who are still earning income during this pandemic have been spending less and are instead directing a majority of income into their savings account. Reports show that Americans who are still employed are stashing away cash rather than saving, boosting the saving rate to 13.1%, the highest since November 1981, from 8.0% in February.

Just seven months ago, Dash was arrested after a domestic violence incident where police alleged she pushed and slapped her husband. She was taken into custody for domestic battery, but the charges were dropped.

The marriage to Marty is the fourth for the actress who is best known for her portrayal of Dionne Davenport in the classic-90s film, Clueless.

After her acting career waned, Dash (whose cousin is Hip-Hop icon Damon Dash) became better known for her controversial politics. She was hired as a contributor for Fox News in 2014 to provide, “cultural analysis and commentary.”

Dash made a number of controversial remarks during her tenure at the conservative network including claiming that former President Barack Obama didn’t “give a sh*t” about terrorism. Dash made other statements like calling for the end of Black History Month and in an awkward appearance at the 88th Academy Awards in 2016, she claimed that she was the “new director” of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences new “minority outreach program.”

The joke left the audience puzzled and she later published a blog post that she would “rather be a free thinking, black than a cookie cutter black who thinks — and votes — just like all my friends.”

Fox News fired Dash in 2017.

Domestic violence is serious, and Dash and her husband as an interracial couple are a part of the fast-growing community to report “Intimate Partner Violence.” According to a report done by US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, “Interracial couples represented as many as 17.9% of substantiated events, and these couples were 1.5 times more likely to mutually assault each other than ethnic minority couples and twice as likely as White couples to experience a mutual assault.”

Couples from mixed races are also more likely than couples of the same race to report an arrest, prior abuse, and a victim injury as a result of the current event.

Indianapolis Boy Killed By Stray Bullet While Quarantining at Home

stray bullet

It’s been over a month since eight-year-old Rodgerick Payne Jr. of Indianapolis was shot and killed by what police believe was a stray bullet that entered his home in the 3200 block of N. Tacoma Avenue on March 31.

Although very few details have been released, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Detective Chris Edwards said young Rodgerick–who was in quarantine–did nothing wrong.

“He was in the process of finishing his dinner,” Detective Chris Edwards of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department told WRTV6 in Indianapolis. “He was in his own living room when a bullet passed through one of the windows of his house and struck him. He wasn’t out doing things he wasn’t supposed to be doing. He was eating dinner in his own home and did absolutely nothing to bring this upon himself.”

Detectives have said several shots were fired in that area. One of those was the stray bullet that went through a window and struck Payne. They believe the person who was the intended target may hold the key to finding Payne’s killer.

“We believe there are people out there who absolutely know the details about what happened. We need those people to come forward,” Edwards said. “At least the person who was getting shot at. We don’t care why they were getting shot at, but that person knows who was shooting at them and they know why it happened. We really need those people to come forward and speak to us.”

“If we don’t want things like this to keep happening in our communities, people need to step up and do the right thing,” Edwards said. “This was a child, eight years old.”
