Will Smith and Tyra Banks recreate classic ‘Fresh Prince’ scene

Tyra Banks and Will Smith got together on a joint IG Tuesday to reminisce about The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and recreated a classic scene and fans loved it.

Banks was a guest on Smith’s Will from Home Snapchat series which he created as a means of entertaining fans through the quarantine.

There are few things certain in life, but the enduring fanbase for Fresh Prince is one of them. Whether you encountered the show as an adult, pre-teen, or tween, there’s something about the charisma of its star Smith combined with wholesome family comedy and the camaraderie of the cast that still has people in their nostalgic feelings, as Deontay Wilder would say “to this DAY!”

The NBC sitcom lasted for six seasons from 1990 to 1996 and helped make Smith, then a rapper with his partner DJ Jazzy Jeff, into a multimedia superstar.

Banks, then 19, appeared on the first two episodes on Season 4 as Smith’s Philly ex-girlfriend, Jackie. She told him that it was her very first acting job. At that point, she was an upcoming model but nowhere near the multimedia mogul she is today.

Smith and Banks recreated their pivotal scene from 30 years ago which Banks impressively still had down pat to the delight of the 2.5 million fans who watched and liked it.

“This next piece is one of my favorite moments, I loved that we did this!” said Smith. “Was that one of your first times ever acting?”

“Not one of, that was my first acting job ever,” she responded.

Massachusetts-born rapper Joyner Lucas similarly paid homage to Smith in his recent video “Will” by recreating significant moments in his career, including his time as the Fresh Prince. He and Smith chatted about it on their joint IG session, which drew a thumbs up from Jazzy Jeff.

Given the show’s popularity, maybe the darker, updated version that Smith himself co-signed can finally get made. Here’s the trailer for it:

Are you down for a reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air or would you prefer that the iconic TV show be left alone?

While you think about it, Will From Home is streamed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with 12 available episodes. It was launched on April 3.

Some People of Color Are Reluctant to Wear Homemade Masks Because of Presumed Criminality

people of color

It seems like every day, messaging about safety precautions for the prevention of the spread COVID-19 is changing. Last week, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti advised residents to wear masks. Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is encouraging Americans to wear masks and encouraging people to make homemade masks due to a shortage. But, CNN reported that some people of color do not feel comfortable wearing masks in public, let alone making them themselves due to possible discrimination.

With over 200,000 confirmed cases of the virus and the death toll surpassing 4,000 people, Americans are taking COVID-19 more seriously. And it was recently reported that black Americans are contracting and dying from COVID-19 at an alarming rate.

Safety is a real concern for many black and brown people as it relates to the health crisis—as well as their livelihood and freedom. And some believe that homemade masks will jeopardize that.

Being able to wear masks without being targeted as a criminal has never been the case for black and brown people—even when they are called for. And for that reason, many people of color, activists, and academics are not in agreement with the measure.

CNN spoke with Trevon Logan, an economics professor at Ohio State University, who shared his take on the matter

“We have a lot of examples of the presumed criminality of black men in general,” Logan, who is black, told CNN. “And then we have the advice to go out in public in something that … can certainly be read as being criminal or nefarious, particularly when applied to black men.”

In the article, Cyntoria Johnson, an assistant professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Georgia State University, shed light on how the way people show up and safety aren’t synonymous.

“People of color have to make conscious decisions every day about the way they show up in the world and are perceived by others, especially the police,” Johnson said.

Safety First

As a part of the CDC’s recommendation to wear masks, they released a YouTube video of Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams, demonstrating ways to create masks.

In a statement to CNN, Adams said, “Health equity, and the complex interactions between race and health, have always been an area of emphasis for my office. I understand the concerns communities of color would have about being racially profiled, and am working with the NAACP, the NMA, and other organizations representing people of color to ensure no one is unduly harmed by COVID-19, or, our response to it.”

Wearing bandanas and face coverings can be dangerous for black and brown people in underserved communities —especially those with gang activity. Beyond gang activity, people of color are often targeted by police officers and those with authority. And some people can’t help but question America’s history.

The rapid outbreak of COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus, has become a public health crisis that has devastated the world. The elderly and people with pre-existing ailments and respiratory problems are among the most vulnerable for contracting the virus. Rapper and entrepreneur Master P is the latest to step up and help out his community during the pandemic by providing free support to senior citizens living in his hometown of New Orleans.

“A lot of people can’t get these hand sanitizers,” he told TMZ. “We are probably the only ones in New Orleans that has it so we want to make sure that the elderly have it.” The rapper also told the entertainment outlet that anyone over the age of 60 years old living in New Orleans can sign up for a deep cleaning of their home in addition to two types of hand sanitizers. Ohio inmate films inside prison after outbreak: ‘Leaving us here to die’

A federal prisoner in Eastern Ohio secretly recorded a video that shows sick inmates in close proximity to each other inside a prison where COVID-19 has claimed the lives of three inmates, has 37 hospitalized and 71 isolation.

“They literally leaving us in here to die,” the unidentified inmate, who wore a mask, said in the lengthy video shot inside the Federal Correctional Institution in Elkton. The video, which had almost 700,000 views on Wednesday morning, shows inmates in his cell coughing and breathing heavily. The situation is so dire at the prison that on Monday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine approved the Ohio National Guard to bring critical medical assistance.

“You all m———–s can social distance. We can’t social distance,” the inmate said in the video, showing an inmate sleeping in the bunk above his bed and two other inmates lying a few feet away, one of whom was coughing and the other wheezed.

“People shouldn’t have to die like this,” the inmate said, later explaining that he has less than a year of prison left on a drug sentence and had asked to be placed on home confinement, but his request was denied.

Sue Allison, a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, told cleveland.com that the bureau is investigating the video.

“We can confirm that after identifying the inmates in the video, none of them were symptomatic of COVID-19,” Allison said via email to the news site.

The federal prison is located about 100 miles from Cleveland. As of Tuesday, 25 Elkton inmates had tested positive for COVID-19, U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson told cleveland.com in a statement. Some of these infected inmates were transferred to nearby hospitals and are being treated.

These numbers contradict what the local Bureau of Prisons reports. According to a tweet submitted by criminal justice reporter, CJ Ciaramello those numbers are not updated. He notes on his account: “Latest COVID-19 numbers out of FCI Elkton federal prison in Ohio, per head of the local BOP union: – 71 inmates in isolation with symptoms – 37 inmates transferred to outside hospital with virus or similar symptoms – 12 of those on ventilators – 3 staff infected”

According to clevescene.com, there were only 17 inmates in isolation and 20 hospitalizations a few days ago.

Gov. DeWine said he is dispatching the guard and also the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide 32 medical staff personnel at the prison to help set up testing labs and treat infected prisoners who show mild symptoms. Inmates showing more serious symptoms will be triaged and transferred to local hospitals.

Meanwhile, attorneys in the Cleveland area filed emergency reprieve requests asking the governor to allow thousands of older inmates and those with underlying health problems to be temporarily released from prisons across the state because they are at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 and dying from it.
