The 15th Annual Women of Power Summit was a Celebration of Black Women and their Excellence

Women of Power

Black women make it easy to celebrate how exceptional they are. And that’s exactly what we did at the 15th Annual Women of Power Summit at The Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas March 5–8 hosted by ADP.

In the 15th year of the event, BE kicked off the summit with registration hosted by Southwest Airlines followed by a shopping excursion hosted by Macy’s, where women enjoyed shopping, pampering stations, and a fashion show.

Later in the evening, women dressed in black and gold in celebration of Black Enterprise’s 50th anniversary and the Legacy Awards reception hosted by Toyota, which transitioned beautifully into the Legacy Awards Gala hosted by PepsiCo.

The energy at the Legacy Awards Gala was at an ultimate high as Caroline Clarke, the chief brand officer of Women of Power, set a celebratory tone for women who have danced through the storm prior to arriving at the summit. We also celebrated leading ladies, Debra Lee, Gale King, Debbie Allen, and Myrtle Potter, who took the stage to accept their awards and share their stories and charges to women as they do their work.

Day Two

Day two of the summit was jam-packed with networking and executive sessions on moving up the corporate ladder, microaggressions in the workplace, body language, and visibility hacks.

Legacy Award winners Debbie Allen and Gale King took center stage for a riveting conversation about relevancy and leadership. And they brought down the house!

Misty Copeland, Glenda Squire, and Clarke also took the stage for an intimate conversation about Copeland’s journey as a black ballerina and her relationship with Squire hosted by Dell. And, past Legacy Award winner Phylicia Rashad and Freda Lewis-Hall spoke profoundly about the myth of the black superwoman and the importance of self-care and sisterhood presented by Pfizer.

Throughout the summit, women were able to receive one-on-one executive coaching as well as financial coaching from JPMorgan Chase. Others attended group financial coaching hosted by Morgan Stanley.

The power showcase room was also a big hit with engaging activations presented by ADP; a wellness suite and juice bar presented by Pfizer; car karaoke presented by Toyota; the digital lounge presented by AT&T; and real talk in the beauty shop presented by Walmart.

Day Three

The final day of the summit started and ended with a bang when veteran political strategist Donna Brazile lit the stage on fire in a fireside chat with Earl ‘Butch’ Graves, president and CEO of BLACK ENTERPRISE.

And Mara Brock Akil and Jodie Patterson joined Clarke for an eye-opening conversation on radical self-love, womanhood, and life at 50 hosted by AARP.  BE also paid tribute to the 50 most impactful women in business over the last 50 years hosted by Accenture. During the ceremony, there was a beautiful tribute to those who have paved the way for the next generation of women in business.

Five lucky women also won round trip tickets from Southwest Airlines for using the #BEWPS hashtag on Twitter!

After a series of powerful conversations, women were able to reenergize with snacks and refreshments during breaks sponsored by PepsiCo.

Some of the highlighted sessions of the day focused on what it takes to sit on a board, negotiating, leading companies globally, and hair politics in the workplace. Women also learned the ins and outs of angel investing at the SistersInc. session hosted by JPMorgan.

Like always, the Women of Power Summit was exceptional! And it wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful host sponsor ADP. As well as all of our proud sponsors including presenting Accenture, Dell Technologies, PepsiCo, Pfizer, and Toyota. Platinum sponsors AARP, AT&T, DOW, Estee Lauder, Google, JPMorgan Chase & Co., KPMG, Macy’s, Morgan Stanley and Walmart. Corporate partners American Express, Apple, Bank of America, DTCC, FedEx, Southwest, VMware, and Georgia-Pacific.

Year 15 of the summit was one for the books and we are looking forward to our Sweet 16. Stay tuned and we hope to see you next year.

Jussie Smollett denied motion to dismiss new charges by Illinois Supreme Court

Actor Jussie Smolletts motion for the Illinois Supreme Court to dismiss six new disorderly conduct charges stemming from a January 2019 alleged hate crime was denied. The state’s top court also refused to remove the special prosecutor in the case.

Both decisions came down on Friday, nearly a month after Smollett was indicted on the six charges presented by special prosecutor Dan Webb. Smollett’s lawyers had argued that the indictment should be tossed on the basis that it “wasn’t proper because the special prosecutor was appointed incorrectly.”

The court offered no rationale as to why it rejected arguments made by Smollett’s lawyers, reported WGN9 TV.

In an emergency petition, Smollett’s lawyers argued that Cook County Circuit Judge Michael Toomin acted outside of his legal authority when he appointed Webb as a special prosecutor last year.

“The circumstances surrounding the initial case in 2019 did not reach the legal level warranting the appointment of a special prosecutor,” attorney William J. Quinlan and Tina Glandian wrote in paperwork, according to Deadline. “Under the terms of the law, in order to appoint a special prosecutor, the office (of Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx) had to file a former recusal with the court and that didn’t occur here.”

Last year, Cook County prosecutors charged Smollett, 37, with 16 counts of disorderly conduct, however, those charges were dismissed by Foxx. After the judge appointed Webb, the new special prosecutor to look into bringing new charges against Smollett, it resulted in the six-count indictment that Smollett’s team had hoped to get dismissed.

On Jan. 29, 2019, Smollett, who is Black and gay, told police that two men who wore masks attacked him and hurled racist and homophonic slurs at him as he walked home early in the morning. Smollett said the men beat him and put a noose around his neck before running away. He said one of the men shouted he was in “MAGA country,” a nod to President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. Chicago police later said none of this was true and that Smollett staged the attack.

Smollett pleaded not guilty last week to the new charges.

Senator Cory Booker proudly endorses Joe Biden for president

Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) endorsed Joe Biden for president on Monday, calling him “the answer to hatred & division” and the person who will “restore honor to the Oval Office.”

Just a day after Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) announced her support for Biden, Booker threw his backing the former vice president’s way. Both senators will campaign in Detroit with Biden tonight and Booker will also join Biden in Flint, Michigan and attend a fundraiser with him – one day before Michigan’s crucial primary vote, reported The New York Times.

The timing of Booker and Harris’ endorsements and their proximity to the Michigan primary is reminiscent of the moderate democrat support Biden received a week ago when Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas all endorsed Biden just before Super Tuesday.

Michigan is a critical state and Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) are both putting tremendous effort into the state and hoping to score a victory. Sanders canceled events over the weekend in Mississippi to concentrate efforts in Michigan, The New York Times reported.

Biden has said he would most likely choose a woman as his vice president, however, Booker’s support raises questions as to whether Booker could be a potential running mate. Booker, the former mayor of Newark, was elected to the Senate in 2013.

On Twitter, Booker said he chose Biden because he brings the stability and experience the country needs.

“The answer to hatred & division is to reignite our spirit of common purpose. @JoeBiden won’t only win – he’ll show there’s more that unites us than divides us. He’ll restore honor to the Oval Office and tackle our most pressing challenges. That’s why I’m proud to endorse Joe,” Booker tweeted.

Booker is up for re-election to the Senate this year. Although his favorability dipped a bit when he temporarily dropped out of the race to campaign for president, he is still popular across New Jersey.
