Trump likens House impeachment inquiry to ‘a lynching’
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump injected racial overtones into the House impeachment inquiry Tuesday by comparing the Democratic-led investigation into his handling of U.S. policy toward Ukraine to a “lynching.” The highest-ranking African American in Congress warned Trump about making the comparison.
Lynchings, or hangings, historically were mostly used by whites against Black men and mostly in the South beginning in the late 19th century amid rising racial tensions in the U.S. By comparing the impeachment process to a lynching, Trump is also likening Democrats to a lynch mob.
Under pressure over impeachment, blowback over his Syria policy and other issues, the Republican president tweeted Tuesday: “So some day, if a Democrat becomes President and the Republicans win the House, even by a tiny margin, they can impeach the President, without due process or fairness or any legal rights.

“All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here – a lynching. But we will WIN!”
House Majority Whip Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., criticized Trump’s word choices.
“That is one word no president ought to apply to himself,” Clyburn said on CNN after the president’s tweet was read to him. “That is a word that we ought to be very, very careful about using.”

Trump has a habit of trying to portray himself as the victim.
His tweet came a day after he lashed at critics of his decision — since rescinded — to schedule a major international economic summit for 2020 at one of his Florida golf properties. He lamented at one point during remarks Monday about “you people with this phony emoluments clause.”

The emoluments clause is in the Constitution and bans presidents from receiving gifts or payments from foreign governments.
A whistleblower’s complaint that Trump was attempting to use his office for personal political gain during a July 25 phone conversation with Ukraine’s president led House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to open the impeachment inquiry.

Trump insists he did nothing wrong. He characterizes the conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as “perfect” and argues that sore-loser Democrats are still trying to overturn the 2016 election that put him in the White House.
Whites used lynchings as a way to resolve anger toward Blacks across the South, where people were blaming their financial problems on newly freed slaves that lived around them, according to the NAACP.

Naomie Harris reveals that she too was groped by an A-List actor
British actress Naomie Harris spoke candidly about her new movie, Black and Blue, and opened up about her own #MeToo moment on her meteoric rise to the top.

Harris, an Oscar nominated actress, is starring in the crime drama centered around her role as a rookie New Orleans cop who accidentally captures a cop-involved killing of a young Black drug dealer on her body cam. She then has to go on the run to save her own neck.
But Harris recalled a time when she watched a casting director and director stand by and look as an A-List actor violated her by groping her.
She told Extra she never told her story early on because of the lack of support. But she now feels encouraged to share it.
“It wasn’t a kind of decision where I was like, ‘Now, I’m going to share my story because I had hidden it for so long…’ It was a real celebration of the fact that I feel as though things have moved on so dramatically since when I first started in this industry. In my 20s, when that incident happened, I didn’t feel there was anybody I could tell about it.”
“I spoke to other actresses and my fellow actresses all experienced something of that kind… It was always expected. We were expected to kind of develop this resilience… Now, I know the culture has completely changed… Consequences happen. I’m really excited about the change.”
Harris stopped short of revealing the actor’s identity. She explained: “I would never do that. It’s not about that person. I don’t want my whole narrative to be hijacked by one person’s name. I’m not defined by what one person did to me… I don’t know how wide-reaching his abuse of power was. It was one incident that happened and thankfully it wasn’t scarring in any way. I got over it and lived to tell the tale.”

Harris had her first breakout role as Eve Moneypenny in 2012’s Skyfall alongside Daniel Craig as James Bond. Harris also starred alongside Idris Elba in 2013’s Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.
In her newest role, Harris plays a tough cop, a far cry from the crack addict character that she played in Moonlight, which earned her a Best Supporting actress nod.
“I love playing strong, amazing women because I think they’re underrepresented. We don’t have enough of those, especially not as leads in the movies.”
Black and Blue is expected to hit theaters October 25.

Princeton Theological Seminary designates $27 million toward reparations
After the Princeton Theological Seminary published a report that it played a role in slavery, they have designated $27 million to pay reparations.
Last November, Princeton Theological Seminary published the report, “Princeton Seminary and Slavery,” which examined the school’s relationship with slave labor. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, research began in 2016 and found that though the school did not directly use slave labor to erect their buildings, 15 percent of its revenue from 1812 to 1861 was a product of donations from slave owners. That figure increased to as much as 30 percent to 40 percent with the inclusion of contributions from benefactors whose wealth was in some way connected to slavery.

It was also discovered that the seminary’s first three professors used slave labor, and have campus facilities named after them.
On Friday, the school’s President M. Craig Barnes said in a statement that the seminary is “committed to telling the truth,” and sees the contribution as an act of repentance, NJ.com reports.
“The Seminary’s ties to slavery are a part of our story,” Barnes said. “It is important to acknowledge that our founders were entangled with slavery and could not envision a fully integrated society… We did not want to shy away from the uncomfortable part of our history and the difficult conversations that revealing the truth would produce.”
According to Anne Stewart, vice president for external relations, the $27.6 million designated for reparations is believed to be the most money any college has committed for that purpose.
The monies will be allocated toward 30 new scholarships, valued at the cost of tuition plus $15,000, “for students who are descendants from slaves or from underrepresented groups.”
The seminary is not affiliated with Princeton University.
There will also be monies committed toward five doctoral fellowships for students who are descendants from slaves. Also, monies will be designated toward hiring a full-time director for the Center for Black Church Studies, among other initiatives, according to the outlet.
