Princeton Theological Seminary designates $27 million toward reparations

After the Princeton Theological Seminary published a report that it played a role in slavery, they have designated $27 million to pay reparations.

Last November, Princeton Theological Seminary published the report, “Princeton Seminary and Slavery,” which examined the school’s relationship with slave labor. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, research began in 2016 and found that though the school did not directly use slave labor to erect their buildings, 15 percent of its revenue from 1812 to 1861 was a product of donations from slave owners. That figure increased to as much as 30 percent to 40 percent with the inclusion of contributions from benefactors whose wealth was in some way connected to slavery.

It was also discovered that the seminary’s first three professors used slave labor, and have campus facilities named after them.

On Friday, the school’s President M. Craig Barnes said in a statement that the seminary is “committed to telling the truth,” and sees the contribution as an act of repentance, NJ.com reports.

“The Seminary’s ties to slavery are a part of our story,” Barnes said. “It is important to acknowledge that our founders were entangled with slavery and could not envision a fully integrated society… We did not want to shy away from the uncomfortable part of our history and the difficult conversations that revealing the truth would produce.”

According to Anne Stewart, vice president for external relations, the $27.6 million designated for reparations is believed to be the most money any college has committed for that purpose.

The monies will be allocated toward 30 new scholarships, valued at the cost of tuition plus $15,000, “for students who are descendants from slaves or from underrepresented groups.”

The seminary is not affiliated with Princeton University.

There will also be monies committed toward five doctoral fellowships for students who are descendants from slaves. Also, monies will be designated toward hiring a full-time director for the Center for Black Church Studies, among other initiatives, according to the outlet.

School security guard gets job back after he was fired for using n-word

A high school security guard in Wisconsin got his job back after he told a student not to call him the n-word, which cost him his position.

NBC15 reports that despite the Madison Metropolitan School District’s zero-tolerance policy for the use of the offensive word, after his firing sparked outrage from the community, they rescinded the termination and restored Marlon Anderson’s job.

Anderson said he just used the word to tell a student to stop calling him a n*gger.

On Oct.9, Anderson said despite repeated requests to refrain from use of the slur, the student kept calling him a “n*gger” during their heated exchange at Madison West High School in Madison. Anderson and the student are both Black, The New York Times reported.

The West High community banded together to fight with Anderson to get his job back. He said the school system’s rule failed him in his use of the n-word.

The student, a senior, finished classes for the day, and took another student’s cell phone. When the assistant principal stepped in, Anderson shared, the student pushed the assistant principal.

Anderson then tried to escort the student out of the building and while doing so, he said the student called him “n*gger” about 15 times. The security assistant then repeated the word when telling the student not to use it. He was ultimately fired.

After Anderson made national headlines, the singer Cher stepped forward and tweeted her outrage over the firing saying she was willing to help him pay legal costs.

According to a release from the union, Madison Teachers Inc., the district restored Anderson back to a paid job status along with full benefits.

“I thank God for the support. I thank God for the students and I’m so proud that they got out there and they fought, and that they made it happen,” Anderson said.

Anderson as offered a job at a local Boys & Girls Club.

Anderson’s son, Noah, President of the West Black Student Union, organized a walkout at the school.

“A slur is directed towards somebody to be derogatory. What my father did was he told, he took a teaching moment as an African-American male to a younger African-American male why he shouldn’t use the word and why to not refer to himself that way,” Noah said Friday afternoon.

“I showed love and I got it back, and I think that’s a beautiful thing, Anderson said.

“I think it’s something everyone should focus on, because we fight each other so much over silly stuff.”

Anderson said the school zero tolerance policy needs to be reviewed.

“I understand the intent for it, but it’s too rigid,” he said. “It’s too lazy. It needs to be addressed. It needs to be dealt with. You’re dealing with people with PhDs. You’re educated people. You can come up with a solution that works for everyone.”

Minaj has been teasing for some time that she was about to get married, after she abruptly announced last month she was quitting the rap game to focus on her family.

Nicki previously told listeners of her QUEEN Radio podcast that she and her man had obtained a marriage license, and she had “about 80 days” to walk down the aisle. Ahead of that, she had already changed her name on social media to “Mrs. Petty.” Fans were already convinced she was married.

“We still had to pick it up and I was traveling, by the time I came back, we had to renew it again,” she said on the Aug. 12 episode of her radio show. “From that time, you have 90 days to get married. That was about a week ago, so now I have about 80 days.”

“I have to work on my album and I have a lot to focus on that I don’t want to do the big wedding now,” she said at the time. “We’ll do the big wedding later.”

The two have been dating since 2018. Petty is a convicted sex offender for attempted rape of a 16-year-old in 1995, according to New York Division of Criminal Justice Services records, The Blast reports. He also was convicted in the shooting death of a man named Lamont Robinson in 2002, according to a criminal complaint obtained by website.
