Sissle and Blake / Abbie Mitchell (1923/1922) | DeForest Phonofilms
Noble Sissle photo taken by Carl Van Vechten, 1951 Noble Lee Sissle (July 10, 1889 – December 17, 1975) was an American jazz composer, lyricist, bandleader, singer, and playwright, best known for the Broadway musical Shuffle Along (1921), and its hit song "I'm Just Wild About Harry". In early 1916 Sissle joined one of the society orchestras organized by James Reese Europe in New York. He persuaded Europe to also hire his friend, pianist and composer Eubie Blake, and later in the year helped Europe organize a regimental band for the 15th Infantry Regiment (Colored) of the New York National Guard. This would later become the New York 369th Infantry "Hell Fighters" Regiment that served nobly in France in World War I, with Europe as a lieutenant and Sissle as his sergeant and lead vocalist.[4] Unlike most military bands it played syncopated music and was credited with introducing jazz to France. Sissle left the army after the war as a second lieutenant with the 370th Infantry Regiment[5] and joined Europe’s civilian version of the 369th band. Sissle began recording for the Pathe label in early 1917, and sang several vocals on Pathe discs recorded by Europe's 369th Infantry Band in early 1919, after it had become a civilian band.[6] Not long afterwards, on May 9, 1919, James Europe was murdered by a disgruntled band member in Boston, Massachusetts, leaving Sissle, with the help of his friend, Eubie Blake, to take temporary charge of Europe's band. Years earlier Sissle had struck up a partnership with Blake after they first met in Baltimore in 1915. ---- James Hubert "Eubie" Blake (February 7, 1887 – February 12, 1983), was an American composer, lyricist, and pianist of ragtime, jazz, and popular music. In 1921, he and his long-time collaborator Noble Sissle wrote Shuffle Along, one of the first Broadway musicals to be written and directed by African Americans.[1] Blake's compositions included such hits as "Bandana Days", "Charleston Rag", "Love Will Find a Way", "Memories of You" and "I'm Just Wild About Harry". The musical Eubie!, which opened on Broadway in 1978, featured his works. ---- Abriea "Abbie" Mitchell Cook (25 September 1884 – 16 March 1960), also billed as Abbey Mitchell, was an American soprano opera singer. She performed the role of "Clara" in the premier production of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess in 1935, and was also the first to record "Summertime" from that musical. Mitchell was the mixed-race daughter of an African-American mother and a Jewish-German father from New York City's Lower East Side.[1] She was reared by a maternal aunt, Alice Payne, in Baltimore, Maryland, where she attended a Catholic convent school. Mitchell was known for performing in the role of "Clara" in the premiere of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess (1935); this was her last musical role on the stage. She was the first singer to record "Summertime" from the opera. After this, "she taught and coached many singers in New York and appeared in many 'spoken' dramatic roles on the stage."[5] In 1939, she played the role of Tallulah Bankhead's intelligent and trusted servant in The Little Foxes on Broadway.[6] She also performed in New York City in other productions and taught at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Lee De Forest made a short film, Songs of Yesteryear (1922), of Mitchell singing, using his DeForest Phonofilm sound-on-film process. This film is preserved in the Maurice Zouary film collection at the Library of Congress. - Wikipedia

Something To Prove (1982) | NBA Championship Sixers vs Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers approached the 1982 season with a mission. The previous year, they had been bounced out of the playoffs in the first round by the upstart Houston Rockets. Now, a year later, the Lakers rallied behind Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to storm through the Western Conference playoffs, sweeping both series. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers had raced out to a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference finals only to watch in horror as Larry Bird and the Celtics fought back to tie the series at three games apiece. In a supreme test of courage, the 76ers ralled to defeat the Celtics at the Boston Garden for the right to face the Lakers in a rematch of the 1980 NBA Finals. The tension is high, the pace furious, and the competition awesome. And you are witness to it all.

Bobby Brown - Bobby EPK (1992)
Electronic Press Kit Interview with Bobby Brown was distributed to music retailers and journalists in support of his 1992 CD, BOBBY. Robert Barisford Brown (born February 5, 1969) is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer and actor. Brown, alongside frequent collaborator Teddy Riley, is noted as a pioneer of new jack swing; a fusion of hip hop and R&B. Brown started his career in the R&B and pop group New Edition, from its inception in 1981[2] until his exit from the group in December 1985. Starting a solo career, Brown enjoyed commercial and critical success with his second album Don't Be Cruel (1988) which spawned five Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles including the number one hit "My Prerogative", and the Grammy Award-winning "Every Little Step". In 1989, Brown contributed two songs to the soundtrack of Ghostbusters II. In 1992, Brown married singer Whitney Houston, with whom he had a daughter named Bobbi Kristina Brown. The couple's drug abuse and domestic disputes made them tabloid fodder. Brown's next album Bobby (1992) spawned several hit singles including "Humpin' Around", "Get Away," and "Good Enough." However, sales of Bobby did not match its predecessor. Some surmise that this may have been due to Brown's recent marriage to Houston, and his decision to take a break from the business for reasons involving his marriage and impending new-fatherhood. - Wikipedia Shared for historical purposes. Motown 30 (1990) Hosted by Robert Townsend
Taped before an audience at the Pantages Theatre, 'Motown 30: What's Goin' On!' is a live musical tribute to the recording company from Detroit in its 30th anniversary. The star-studded television special celebrates the achievements of its entertainers from the late 1950s to 1990. Includes commercials. ---- "The 1983 special Motown 25 is now remembered primarily for a single segment — the one featuring the remarkable dancing of Michael Jackson before he became an all-pervasive media event. In Motown 30, no one steals the show like that. Instead, this homage to three decades of Motown music contains a whole succession of terrific performances. Tracy Chapman sings the civil rights anthem ”A Change is Gonna Come” with more warmth than anything on her last album had; Terence Trent D’Arby elicits screams of amazement from the audience when he delivers a howling, gospel version of Smokey Robinson’s ”Who’s Lovin’ You.” And there’s a salute to Mary Wells, now suffering from throat cancer, that is sung by Robinson, Stevie Wonder, and Gladys Knight; accompanied only by Wonder on piano, these Motown vets are marvelously relaxed and passionate at the same time. Like most variety shows, the pace is uneven, as are the comedy segments by everyone from Robert Townsend (Hollywood Shuffle) to Sinbad (A Different World). But what matters is the music, and the music is great. A" - Entertainment Weekly Shared for historical purposes. Curt Flood Documentary (2011) | EDITED #CurtFloodDay
Curtis Charles Flood (January 18, 1938 – January 20, 1997) was an American baseball player. He was a center fielder who played 15 seasons in the major leagues for the Cincinnati Redlegs, St. Louis Cardinals, and Washington Senators. Flood was a three-time All-Star, a Gold Glove winner for seven consecutive seasons, and batted over .300 in six seasons.[1] He led the National League (NL) in hits (211) in 1964 and in singles, 1963, 1964, and 1968. Flood also led the National League in putouts as center fielder four times and in fielding percentage as center fielder three times. He retired with the third most games in center field (1683) in NL history, trailing Willie Mays and Richie Ashburn. Flood became one of the pivotal figures in the sport's labor history when he refused to accept a trade following the 1969 season, ultimately appealing his case to the U.S. Supreme Court.[2] Although his legal challenge was unsuccessful, it brought about additional solidarity among players as they fought against baseball's reserve clause and sought free agency.

Santa, Baby! (2001) | Vanessa Williams Eartha Kitt Animation | #ChristmasInJuly
Santa, Baby! is a 2001 animated holiday special that aired on the Fox network. It was Rankin/Bass' first new original Christmas special in over sixteen years (their past holiday production was the 1985 adaptation of The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus), and the only one produced after the liquidation of their animation department. The Special featured the voices of Eartha Kitt and Gregory Hines. Like much of Rankin/Bass' specials, it was based off a song, in this case, the 1954 song originally recorded by Kitt and covered in A Very Special Christmas by Madonna in 1986. When a young black girl uses her wish from a Christmas partridge to help her dad over his song-writing slump, he finds his inspiration and even gives the real Santa Claus a helping hand. - https://ift.tt/2P1rzJ7! While the physical enslavement of Africans may have been abolished in the United States in 1865, the mental enslavement of Blacks worldwide continues. Savages, Servants and Specialty Acts, demonstrates how Black Identity is largely dictated by The White Imagination. Using rare film clips and archival footage, Film historian Charles Woods demonstrates how we were indoctrinated into a belief system of White Supremacy and Black Inferiority through the use of the motion picture and perpetuates itself in all mass media. From the Tarzan movies of the 1930s to Black Panther and Queen & Slim, the subversive tricks still exist—even when Black filmmakers are in control.

Redd Foxx on the Bob Hope Christmas Special (1972)
Comic legends Redd Foxx and Bob Hope Entertain the troops at Diego Garcia in 1972. ----- Diego Garcia is an island overseas territory of the United Kingdom. It is a militarised atoll just south of the equator in the central Indian Ocean, and the largest of 60 small islands comprising the Chagos Archipelago. It was first discovered by Europeans and named by the Portuguese, settled by the French in the 1790s and transferred to British rule after the Napoleonic Wars. It was one of the "Dependencies" of the British Colony of Mauritius until the Chagos Islands were detached for inclusion in the newly created British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) in 1965. In 1966, the population of the island was 924. These people were employed as contract farm workers on primarily coconut plantations owned by the Chagos-Agalega company. Although it was common for local plantation managers to allow pensioners and the disabled to remain in the islands and continue to receive housing and rations in exchange for light work, children after the age of 12 were required to work. In 1964, only 3 of a population of 963 were unemployed. In April 1967, the BIOT Administration bought out Chagos-Agalega for £600,000, thus becoming the sole property owner in the BIOT. The Crown immediately leased back the properties to Chagos-Agalega but the company terminated the lease at the end of 1967. Between 1968 and 1973, the now unemployed farm workers were forcibly removed from Diego Garcia by the UK Government so a joint US/UK military base could be established on the island. Many were deported to Mauritius and the Seychelles, following which the United States built a large naval and military base, which has been in continuous operation since then. As of August 2018, Diego Garcia is the only inhabited island of the BIOT; the population is composed of military personnel and supporting contractors. It is one of two critical US bomber bases in the Asia Pacific region, along with Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, Pacific Ocean. - Wikipedia Shared for historical purposes. Romany Malco Talks Tijuana Jackson (2020) | Part 1 Skype Interview
Romany Malco, writer, director, producer and star of the feature film, TIJUANA JACKSON: PURPOSE OVER PRISON joined Reelblack founder Mike D. to discuss his film, which is coming to Virtual theaters on July 24 and On-demand on July 31, 2020. https://ift.tt/2eFI0qP https://ift.tt/3fOCkdO https://www.youtube.com/user/RomanyMalco ----- Tijuana Jackson (ROMANY MALCO) is a man determined to move beyond his checkered past and achieve his ambition of becoming a world renowned motivational speaker. When asked to be the subject of a 10 minute student film, TJ leaps at the opportunity. 10 minutes turns into 10 hours, and 10 hours become 10 life altering days of courage and inspiration. Determined to be more than a statistic with a pipe dream, TJ stops at nothing to earn the respect of his family, and crush (REGINA HALL), who is currently his probation officer, by becoming the success story they claimed he’d never be. https://ift.tt/2eFI0qP Facebook: @TJCanHelp Instagram: @tijuanajackson Twitter: @tijuanajackson https://youtu.be/8twrZpkRgDg https://youtu.be/h1KQnrRVAKs DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT I created this YouTube character to reach a demographic that much of America has written off as detriments to society, losers and outcasts. I did not expect Tijuana Jackson’s YouTube channel to gain the Universal appeal that it did. Nor did I expect a full page write up in the New York Times. After thousands of DMs thanking this fictional character for his lessons, humor and insight I realized there were millions of people from all over the world who saw value in Tijuana Jackson’s Prison Logic, and that is what inspired this film. My producers, Brian and Josh Etting were the first to speak of a Tijuana Jackson feature film but obtaining financing for this type of character proved impossible. So, Tijuana Jackson’s fanbase decided to finance the film themselves, hence the birth of Tijuana Jackson: Purpose Over Prison. My goal with “Tijuana Jackson: Purpose Over Prison” is to redefine success as we know it and teach others that monetary gain, social status and the acquisition of things mean nothing without purpose. My hope is that this film helps explain how these three components of "traditional success" are all synonymous with debt and only offer temporary gratification. As suggested in “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl (author and survivor of an Auschwitz concentration camp), it is through servicing others that we find our greatest sense of fulfillment. This is a lesson that our main character, Tijuana Jackson learns along his journey throughout the “Purpose Over Prison” mockumentary. “Tijuana Jackson: Purpose Over Prison” is most celebrated for its ability to fuse humor with profound life lessons. So, rather than large set pieces and visual effects, we focused heavily on relationships, emotional nuances and the subtle psychological impairments of our lead characters to capture the essence of this comedic tale in a cost effective manner. Thanks to technology, an amazing cast and a savvy production team we were able to create a micro-budgeted comedy which has potential for mass appeal. We hope the world enjoys the story as much as we enjoyed the process. —Romany Malco ##### Reelblack's mission is to educate, elevate, entertain, enlighten, and empower through Black film.
